Dispatchers have long been known as the first, first responders, and they and their families face unique challenges as a result of chronic exposure to the police, fire, and emergency medical incidents they coordinate responses to. Chronic exposure to trauma can have profound impacts on an individualís life views and presents a significant danger to oneís career, life, relational life, and functional coping strategies. Itís been well researched and documented that first responders have a high incidence of anxiety disorders, including acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as a variety of mood disorders. This presentation will discuss how dispatchers can be affected similarly and how to manage critical incident stress.
